Replies sought on barriers outside CM’s houseLAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday sought replies from the Punjab chief secretary and inspector general of police about barricades installed outside the Model Town residence of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Naushaba Mudassar and other residents of the Model Town had filed a petition against the blockade of roads by erecting permanent [concrete] barricades around the chief minister’s residence.
Advocates Saarim Israr and Muhammad Usman argued on behalf of the petitioners that the public thoroughfares near and around the chief minister’s house in Model Town had been blocked in the name of security.
They said the residents of the area had been facing a great deal of inconvenience due to permanent blockage of roads.
The lawyers said the locality had become a no-go area for the petitioners and other residents of Model Town.
They asked the court to order the government and the police to remove the barriers installed there.
Justice Shahid Karim heard the arguments and issued notices to the chief secretary and the IGP for next week.
A three-judge full bench headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan is also scheduled to hear on Jan 31 an identical petition challenging blockade of roads in the city including outside the Jati Umra residence of the ruling Sharif family, their family home in Model Town and office of the IGP.
Civil Society Network’s Abdullah Malik had filed the petition with an argument that curtailment of movement was a violation of fundamental rights.
